GOD OF LOST CAUSES

As Yuuki threw the coin down the well, Naki waited patiently with his hand open. After a few moments the coin materialized above his hand and fell into it. He shook his head slightly at her wish thinking "Really girl? A God following you around for days and you ask for a new book?" He sighs, and flips the coin over his knuckles and walks towards Yuuki. Standing right in front of her he runs his hands through his hair in an action that seems very frustrated. "I was drawn to you. You obviously need me. But if all you want is a book, I'll get you your silly book!" he barks out waggling his finger under her nose. When she doesn't respond he lets out an even more frustrated sound then sighs. "No good being angry with you I suppose, but I will grant your prayer." He whistles a merry little tune as he goes in search of Roth Grant.

Roth Grant lived in quite a place. That is how he always spoke of it. In truth, it was a dump. It was an apartment from the WWII era that had heating and cooling only through the power of window mounted units. The floors were tatami mats and the walls were traditional paper inside. It made for very little privacy between him and his mother.

Roth's mother came to Japan from New Zealand as the mistress of a big time CEO in Japan. He wanted to move her closer since the New Zealand branch closed down. Roth's father was that CEO, though not a soul outside of his mother would admit it. In fact, the man stopped speaking to Miss Grant after he found she was with child. Needless to say, Roth had an interesting child hood being mixed in Japan.

He stumbled upon the niche of romance novels written in English for a Japanese audience when he was in high school. The man pumped out fifty two novels and stopped. No one, not even his mother knew why he stopped. His mother didn't even know where the money went from all these wonderful books. They were living in squalor when Roth's books were frequently on the best seller list.

Roth contemplated these things as he lay in the grass of the park near his building. He knew where the money went and why he had stopped writing. He wasn't going to share it with a soul, though. It was far too embarrassing.

Natanaki wandered aimlessly into the park and saw the man laying in the grass. He slowly walked around Roth and eyed him up and down. "I'm not even sure what kind of books this guy writes, but...oh well." He crouched down near the Roth's head and Whispered to him hoping it would work...sometimes untouched mortals couldn't Hear properly. "Roth...you should write another book. It is VERY important" his words rang out with an echo of Power even though they were at the level of a whisper. "Hopefully that will be enough to get the ball rolling. But nothing is ever that easy..." Natanaki thought to himself.

"Buzz off, noisy bee. I don't want to." He said as he threw his arm over his eyes. It was clear that the whisper was easily heard and understood to be something not from his own mind. "Why don't you muses ever give a guy a break? Or better yet actually stick around when I need you most?"

He rolled over and looked up at the sky. After being quiet for a moment he sighed. "Your voice is new. I've not heard it before. It is strong."

Natanaki eyebrows raised in surprise as he realized this guy was aware of him. "He's heard my kind before? That's...interesting." He began to pace and talk to himself..."Obviously we've let him down in some way. And it doesn't seem like he's very happy. Maybe I can fix two birds with one stone?" He began to Whisper again, this time being a little more gentle with his power ""I don't know what others may have done or not done. If we failed you, I am sorry. If you will write another book, I will try and correct our error. Your books...they are important. For some, it is the only thing that gets them through the day." Natanaki sighs saying "It is so typical of my brethren to just cast aside Mortals when they are done. They just don't understand how important you are" as he looks sadly at Roth.

"She got me through the day." He sighed. "Did you know her? The muse with the sweet voice. One day her voice got softer and softer, then it didn't come at all. Her words were my books. I have no words and so I have no book. What am I supposed to do?"

The man sat up and plucked at some grass. "I stupidly told her that I loved her, that I wished she would show herself. People told me that she was a voice in my head, that I was sick. I took medication but her voice didn't go away so I pretended she wasn't there... that is when her voice grew quiet. Did I do wrong?"

Natanaki puts his hands to his forehead as he listens to Roth's responses. "Oh sister, what have you done to this poor man?" He continues to Whisper to him "You did nothing wrong. Our kind comes and goes like the wind. Perhaps she thought you believed that you were crazy, but more likely she was called away to be someone else's muse. We have duties and responsibilities to your world that cannot be ignored." He sighs deeply to himself. "If I ever find the God that did this I will have to chew her out."

The man grew quiet with those words and mulled over the thoughts in his head. He stood and dusted off his pants. "We all have duties and responsibilities. I suppose I should stop dreaming. A voice can never be a person to be with. A muse is just a voice to me."

Roth ruffled his hair and let out a yell of frustration, the last of his frustration. "You said this was important, that I write again. Why?"

Natanaki sighs and thinks for a moment before Whispering, "It is important because you inspire people. You create dreams of longing and love. There needs to be more love and romance in the world. I was asked by a particular person to get you to right a book, but I know they represent a much, much bigger picture. So much bigger than you, or your muse. I know it won't be easy, but you need to write and keep writing for as long as you can to bring as much love into this world as possible." Natanaki stops and purses his lips in thought for a moment before continuing, "This is your purpose. And as I said before, if you ask by making a wish at the temple, I will do everything in my power to bring you love." Natanaki sighs and paces back and forth thinking, "I am not a love God, what am I thinking?!?"
